Firefox 156: A Game-Changer for Efficient JPG Viewing with Reduced CPU Usage

Firefox has released version 156, which brings enhancements aimed at improving efficiency and user experience. Key updates include a reduction in CPU usage while viewing large JPEG images and faster startup times for its built-in PDF viewer.
When users browse the web, images are frequently displayed at a size smaller than their full resolution due to CSS scaling. With Firefox 156, the browser leverages libjpeg-turbo’s IDCT scaling during the decoding process, allowing it to reduce images without fully loading them into memory first. This optimization is reported to decrease memory usage by as much as 20 times when handling large images and to accelerate decoding speeds—often doubling them. However, these improvements are designed to enhance performance without altering the user experience substantially.
Additionally, the built-in PDF viewer has become more efficient, launching up to 45% faster by preloading the background PDF.js worker. Other updates include sponsored suggestions appearing in the address bar for users in select countries, with options to disable them in the settings.
The release also addresses various bugs, including issues with dragging images in rich-text editors, problems with playing FLAC audio in MP4 on certain sites, and issues related to Picture-in-Picture mode.
Furthermore, a critical connectivity issue was fixed, resolving a problem where enabling the built-in free VPN would disrupt network connections.
Firefox 156 is available for download and will automatically update for existing users through various platforms, including the Snap Store for Ubuntu users. Users can expect the next version, Firefox 157, in two weeks, which is anticipated to include the new Nova redesign as the default interface.
