Canonical has announced a preliminary release timetable for Ubuntu 24.10 ‘Oracular Oriole’.
Based on this schedule, the official stable release of Ubuntu 24.10 should be launched on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
A six-month development phase is on the horizon, including a beta release of the ‘Oracular Oriole’ slated for September 19, with a subsequent release candidate build planned for October 3 to pinpoint any outstanding problems.
As an ‘interim’ or short-term release, Ubuntu 24.10 will receive only 9 months of support after its release. It’s brief, yet significant, perfectly aligning with the anticipated Ubuntu 25.04 update slated for April of the following year.
Key milestones in the Ubuntu 24.10 release schedule (subject to change):
- Feature Freeze: August 15th
- User Interface Freeze: September 5th
- Kernel Freeze: September 26th
- Final Freeze: October 3rd
With notable release dates as follows, all 2024:
- Ubuntu 24.10 (beta): September 19th
- Ubuntu 24.10 (release candidate): October 3rd
- Ubuntu 24.10 (stable release): October 10th
Any day now, daily builds of Ubuntu 24.10 will be available for testing. These builds are inherently unstable, particularly at the beginning of a new development cycle due to the package churn from syncing and import from Debian.
However, as Ubuntu 24.10 gains momentum, it is expected to bring some significant updates.
The latest Ubuntu will have Linux kernel 6.11 (or newer), GNOME 47 desktop and potentially further enhancements to the Flutter-based desktop installer. Will we see the Desktop Security Center that was briefly seen during the noble cycle? 🤔
Moreover, there is a possibility that the various snags that led Canonical developers to delay the release of an all-snap immutable Ubuntu Core Desktop along with Ubuntu 24.04 have been sorted out, marking its first official introduction in the wild.
For now, lot of maybes. As plans for this release shore up you can be sure I’ll be writing about them so keep an eye on the blog as development gets underway.
