Audacity 3.6 open-source, free, and cross-platform audio editor has been released today as a major update introducing several new features, a fresh new look, and various improvements.
Coming almost three months after Audacity 3.5, the Audacity 3.6 release introduces master effects, which are effects that apply to the entire project at once, a new compressor and limiter effects that feature gain reduction history when they’re used as a real-time effect, and new and improved dark and light themes.
“You can switch between themes via Preferences -> Interface. The theme previously used still is around as the Classic theme, and themes even older than that can be optionally installed as custom themes,” explained the devs.
This release also adds support for the latest and greatest FFmpeg 7 open-source multimedia framework, support for pasting audio files into Audacity using Ctrl+V, a new ‘Export Selected Audio’ in n Extras > Export option, support for offsets larger than 2 GB, and an option to the View menu to show/hide RMS in waveforms.
Moreover, Audacity 3.6 brings a redesigned What’s New dialog, support for downloading OpenVINO AI effects from audacityteam.org/download/openvino/, support for themeable alternative waveform colors via custom themes, as well as a new ‘GetInfo: Type=Selection’ option in Scripting.
Various bugs were addressed as well, including a bug that could open a project with the wrong sample rate, a bug causing stray orange lines when using the High Contrast theme, a bug that affects the quality slider for Ogg export on Linux systems, a bug in the macro manager preventing it from showing parameterless actions as editable, and a bug when recording to a new track preventing it from being scrolled back into view again.
You can download Audacity 3.6 right now from the official website as an AppImage binary that you can run on virtually any GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything on your personal computer. Check out the release notes for more details about the changes included in this version.
