Calibre E-book Manager Unveils AI-Generated Book Cover Feature
A recent update to the popular open-source eBook manager, Calibre, brings an intriguing feature: the ability to create custom book covers using generative AI. Released on August 28, version 9.14 allows users to edit metadata for books in their library and generate covers in various styles, such as romance or science fiction, by clicking an "AI Generate" button. However, users need to set an AI provider that supports image generation by providing an API key.
While it might seem odd to generate new covers for books that usually have them, this feature could appeal to those looking to create enticing visuals for works that lack covers or to experiment with creative styles. It’s unlikely to become popular as a saying, but the fun of seeing unconventional covers can’t be dismissed.
Additionally, the new update includes enhancements to support Anthropic’s Claude and Grok AI models, but the GitHub backend has been removed following the retirement of GitHub Models. A long-standing bug has also been addressed, fixing issues with interactions on various dialog boxes.
Other improvements in Calibre 9.14 include:
- Functional accented character searches in the tag editor.
- Enhanced cover previews in the metadata editor that maintain aspect ratio.
- Floating image previews in the file browser.
Bug fixes encompass correcting the display of Kindle lockscreen cover images and adding a progress bar when restoring more than five deleted books. Security enhancements have been implemented to mitigate vulnerabilities in the content server.
To install the latest version of Calibre, users can download it from the official website. On Linux systems, it can be installed via a command-line script. Calibre is also available on Flathub, but users on Linux Mint will need to enable unverified sources in their Software Manager to access it.
