Enhancements in Calamares 3.3.2 Installer: Manual Partitioning Boost and Qt 6 Compatibility Improvement

Today, Adriaan de Groot has released an updated version of the universal installer program for GNU/Linux distributions, Calamares 3.3.2. This new maintenance update is part of the ongoing Calamares 3.3 series.

A short time since the release of Calamares 3.3.1, the 3.3.2 update brings further enhancements. The earlier update added simple Ubuntu builds onto the CI roster, reorganized internal coding, gave more string context, and expanded the configuration options for the Display Manager module’s greetd.

Calamares 3.3.2 works to improve compatibility with Qt 6. It achieves this by adapting the Slideshow support QML code to match the current Qt 6 open-source application framework. Simultaneously, it also discontinues compatibility with Qt versions older than Qt 5.15.5 LTS. This progression is valuable for distributions intending to feature the looming KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment along with other Qt 6-based desktops.

Further enhancements within this release include the rectification of a fstab bug, previously causing Btrfs to jumble partition layouts. The Partition module also now covers unencrypted partitions when encryption is engaged.

Finally, Calamares 3.3.2 offers the ability to configure the NetworkManager network connection manager utilizing the live system’s NetPlan settings on NetPlan facilitated systems, like Ubuntu Linux.

In mid-december 2023, Calamares 3.3 was launched as a significant update that introduced a plethora of new features such as a zfshostid module for duplicating ZFS-produced /etc/hostid, compatibility for LUKS and LUKS2 disk encryption in the Partition module, support for a flexible kernel name in the Dracut module, alongside a more contemporary UI for both Keyboard and Locale modules.

The majority of GNU/Linux distributions that utilize Calamares as their go-to graphical installer have already installed this update. Maintainers of distributions utilizing Calamares have the ability to download the Calamares 3.3.2 release immediately, from the project’s GitHub page.

Linux users will be able to enjoy these features the next time they install their favorite GNU/Linux distribution using the Calamares universal graphical installer, such as KaOS, Lubuntu 24.04 LTS, Kubuntu 24.04 LTS, and others. Calamares 3.3 is fully compatible with the latest Qt 6 and KDE Frameworks 6 frameworks.
