GNOME 47.2 Official Release: Enhancements and Bug Fixes Unveiled!

The GNOME Project has officially released GNOME 47.2, the second maintenance update for the GNOME 47 "Denver" desktop environment series. This update, arriving a month and a half after GNOME 47.1, focuses on a range of bug fixes and improvements aimed at enhancing user experience across several components, including GNOME Shell, Mutter, Epiphany, GNOME Software, and more.

Key enhancements in GNOME 47.2 include improved accessibility for the keyboard backlight Quick Settings toggle, modifications to mitigate CPU stalls on secondary NVIDIA GPUs, and adjustments ensuring better GPU selection and frame event handling for cursor surfaces. The update also introduces a default preference for high thread priority in KMS threads, improving system responsiveness.

Moreover, GNOME 47.2 fixes issues related to touchscreen drag-and-drop functionality in Wayland sessions and improves cursor behavior with virtual monitors. Users will benefit from a resolution for pointer cursor behavior during compositor grabs and various issues affecting X11 and remote headless sessions.

The graphical user interface has been refined as well, addressing problems with partially-rounded buttons, caret tracking in the GNOME Shell magnifier, and the functionality of the on-screen keyboard.

GNOME Software has been updated to rectify issues with distro upgrades and Snap app uninstalls, enhancing the adaptive nature of the uninstall dialog for smaller screens. The GNOME Control Center was improved as well, with updates to various panels, ensuring a more user-friendly experience.

In addition, the included GNOME applications such as Epiphany and GNOME Text Editor have received critical bug fixes and usability enhancements. Epiphany 47.2 addresses issues with DuckDuckGo redirects, website crashes, and the bookmark edit dialog while the GNOME Text Editor has improved URI handling for tooltips and fixed several markup issues.

Furthermore, enhancements to the Orca screen reader provide better support for LibreOffice and GNOME Web, ensuring accessibility improvements throughout.

For a comprehensive list of changes, users can view the detailed changelog on the announcement page. It is recommended to update to GNOME 47.2 as soon as the packages are available in your distro’s stable software repositories.
