Introducing PhotoCraft: The Open-Source AI-Powered Alternative to Photoshop

PhotoCraft is an open-source image editor designed to mimic Adobe Photoshop, made possible through AI coding tools. This project, led by Brandon Thomas, the former CEO of storyteller.ai, aims to provide a "clean-room reimplementation" of Photoshop that avoids copyright issues by not reverse-engineering undocumented elements.

Currently in alpha, PhotoCraft is already rich in features, including layers, masks, a brush engine, and the ability to open and save Adobe’s PSD file format. It replicates Photoshop’s menus, shortcuts, and tools, making the transition easier for users familiar with Photoshop. Performance is also optimized, supporting GPU acceleration through Vulkan, Metal, and DX12, ensuring a fast and responsive user experience.

The motivation for creating PhotoCraft stemmed from Thomas’s frustrations with Adobe’s subscription fees and the hurdles encountered when trying to cancel his subscription. While the application has a familiar interface and several useful features, it is essential to note that it is still a superficial clone of Photoshop. Users may find that it doesn’t quite match Photoshop’s performance and output, particularly for advanced functionalities that professionals rely on.

Casual users may not notice significant differences and can perform basic edits with PhotoCraft. However, professionals may find the application lacking in specific features, bugs, and variations in output compared to Adobe’s software.

PhotoCraft is free and supports multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. Users can find alpha builds on the project’s GitHub releases page, including a DEB installer for Ubuntu. While the software is free, the ArtCraft website mentions subscription tiers that provide AI credits for enhanced features, which are not currently included in PhotoCraft.

The development pace for PhotoCraft is rapid, with multiple updates released in a short timeframe, reflecting the strong interest and goodwill it is generating in the community.
