Two months following the release of Shotcut 24.06, the developers have introduced Shotcut 24.08. This latest version of the open-source and cross-platform video editor brings enhanced subtitle functionality along with other various improvements.
The new Subtitles panel in Shotcut 24.08, found under the View > Subtitles menu, simplifies and speeds up the process of rendering subtitles directly on videos. Subtitles can now be added specifically to projects on the Timeline, rather than on playlists or clips.
Users have the ability to handle multiple subtitle tracks and can import subtitles in various formats including SRT, VTT, ASS, and SSA. It is also possible to export subtitles into SRT format. Formats such as MKV, MOV, and MP4 do support subtitle functionality.
“We recommend to save subtitle editing until the timeline editing is complete because moving or cutting clips on the timeline will break the subtitle synchronization,” stated the developers. “When exporting a Shotcut project, subtitles will be embedded in the output file if the file format supports it.”
Shotcut 24.08 now includes a new “Subtitle Burn In” video filter that is exclusively available on the Output track, enabling users to superimpose subtitles directly onto the project video.
This release also introduces enhancements such as the addition of a Power (W) (#gps_power#) field in the GPS Text video filter. Furthermore, it sets the Softness to 0 in the Obscure With Blur and Obscure With Mosaic filter sets. Additionally, it has improved navigation by allowing focus changes in the Filters > search with the Enter or Return keys, and in the Help > Actions and Shortcuts > search with the Up or Down keys.
Shotcut 24.08 also addresses several issues including the failure of Linux portable packages (AppImage and Snap) on specific systems like Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Qt 6 and Wayland, occasional audio disturbances like pops or clicks with certain media files including uncompressed audio, a delay in the Filters > search, and the slow opening of file dialogs on the Linux AppImage.
