Ubuntu 24.04.2 Set to Launch on February 13 with Linux Kernel 6.11

Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS is set to be released on February 13th, coinciding with Valentine’s Day. Canonical’s Florent Jacquet announced the date on the Ubuntu Developer mailing list, reminding developers to limit non-essential package uploads to ensure smooth testing and preparation for this release.

Typically, point releases do not introduce new features but instead offer significant updates, such as a new Linux kernel and updated graphics drivers. This upcoming release will incorporate updates back-ported from Ubuntu 24.10, which features Linux Kernel 6.11 and Mesa 24.2.

Additionally, Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS will introduce support for the new Raspberry Pi 500 in its install image for Raspberry Pi.

Maintaining the tradition of point releases, this update will enable users of long-term support releases to benefit from the latest hardware capabilities and kernel enhancements without requiring a fresh install. Existing users of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will receive the new Hardware Enablement stack (HWE) as a software update, ensuring they will seamlessly transition to Linux kernel 6.11 without needing any special actions before the release date.

The following point release, Ubuntu 24.04.3, is anticipated to arrive in August, promising to bring Linux kernel 6.14 and the Mesa stack associated with the upcoming Ubuntu 25.04 ‘Plucky Puffin’ release.
