Volla, the creator of Volla Phone smartphones, has initiated a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for their debut tablet device, the Volla Tablet. This device will also be compatible with the Ubuntu Touch mobile OS.
“With options like the hide.me VPN and Ubuntu Touch OS, you’re in control like never before.”
Equipped with a 12.3-inch Quad HD display with a resolution of 2650×1600 pixels, the Volla Tablet is powered by a robust MediaTek Gaming G99 8-core processor. It also offers 12 GB RAM, 256 GB internal storage, and a durable 10,000 mAh battery. Additional features include 2G/3G/4G cellular network support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a 13+5 MP primary camera.
Volla Tablet is typically shipped with Volla OS 13, an in-house operating system developed by Volla and based on the open-source Android Open Source Project (AOSP). However, users will have the option to purchase the tablet with Ubuntu Touch. This features built-in convergence and supports Android apps through the WayDroid container.
Additionally, users will also be able to use desktop apps like Firefox or LibreOffice thanks to the help of the Libertine container. Volla says that Volla Tablet with Ubuntu Touch is ideal for Linux enthusiasts and minimalists seeking a simplified, efficient, and familiar operating system experience.
Ubuntu Touch is already a popular choice among Volla customers as it works perfectly on the Volla Phone 22, Volla Phone X, and Volla Phone X23 smartphones. But if you need a bigger display, I believe you’ll find the Volla Tablet with Ubuntu Touch the perfect companion for your projects.
“Experience a world premiere with multi-boot functionality, allowing easy installation of additional operating systems without data loss or complicated setups. Strictly separate professional and private data with customizable security settings,” reads the Kickstarter page.
For my U.S. audience, it’s important to know the Volla Tablet can only connect to mobile networks in the U.S. if you’re using a roaming SIM card from overseas. Volla has indicated they are seeking PTCRB certification from North American cell service providers, provided there is sufficient demand for the Volla Tablet.
If you’re in the market for a tablet pre-loaded with Ubuntu Touch, consider supporting the Volla Tablet project by visiting their Kickstarter page. Prices begin at $562 USD for the Volla Tablet, which includes a USB charging cable and a USB power adapter suitable for EU outlets. The projected delivery window is October 2024.
