Exploring a Live GNOME 2 Desktop: A Developer’s Unique Personal Website

Benny Powers, a software developer at Red Hat, has created a personal website that emulates the classic GNOME 2 desktop environment. This innovative site diverges from the typical vertical text layout and modern design trends, opting instead for a playful, nostalgic interface that mirrors a working GNOME 2 desktop environment.

Inspired by an essay discussing the whimsical nature of early web design, Powers decided his website needed to be more unique. The result is a fully functional site that retains the appearance of GNOME 2, built using technologies like the Lit framework and the View Transitions API.

Visitors can interact with various elements as if they were on an actual desktop. For example, the Latest Posts folder contains clickable documents for recent blog entries, while the site features a dual-panel desktop setup, draggable windows, and menus reminiscent of the classic interface. Users can navigate through the Places menu, which provides links to Powers’ social media and GitHub profiles.

The site allows users to customize the experience by changing wallpapers and switching themes to a dark version of the classic Clearlooks GTK theme. It includes a chat window modeled after the Pidgin chat client that showcases social media feeds in a conversation format. Additionally, there are playful nods to historical software design, such as slide decks resembling OpenOffice’s Impress.

Powers’ site even includes interactive versions of classic GNOME games like Gnometris and Mines, as well as functional Calculator and Terminal applications. This blend of detail and creativity brings a sense of nostalgia for users familiar with the Ubuntu or GNOME experiences of the late 2000s.
