Flathub’s AI Slop Ban: A Strategic Decision that Proves to be the Right Move

When Flathub recently banned submissions of AI-coded applications, some critics decried the move as shortsighted, suggesting it dismissed an emerging wave of innovative software known as “vibe-coded” apps. However, new analysis indicates that the majority of these rejected apps were virtually non-existent—about 73% of them were no longer actively developed just a few months after their creation.

This investigation was led by Evangelos Paterakis, who examined 120 repositories of apps that had been turned away from Flathub due to their reliance on AI. Among these rejected apps, 88 had either ceased development or completely erased their source code, leaving only 32 still showing signs of activity.

The findings diminish the notion that users were eager to embrace a new generation of AI applications, debunking claims that those sidelined by Flathub would migrate to alternative formats or app stores. It appears that the content of the ban included many projects that had already lost momentum before their submission, suggesting minimal demand within the community.

Though Paterakis’s research methodology may not have been formal or scholarly, he emphasizes that it highlights a critical reason for the ban: volunteer reviewers would have faced overwhelming challenges assessing submissions filled with hastily generated AI output. This rendered the review process unmanageable, as the apps didn’t always demonstrate meaningful human input.

A broader discourse has emerged around the concept of “software slop”—the question remains: what truly constitutes low-quality software? Some have suggested that if AI tools are supposed to better support developers in creating innovative applications, then there should already be evidence of leaps in functionality and creativity. Instead, what has emerged is often simplistic and unoriginal in nature.

The ease of using AI to produce software has not necessarily translated to high-quality outputs or sustained interest in projects post-release. While vibe-coding may facilitate the transition from concept to application, it does not inherently cultivate innovative ideas or the drive necessary to refine and develop them over time. Ultimately, while AI can be a valuable tool, its efficiency is most effective when grounded in skilled craftsmanship and authentic enthusiasm.
