GIMP 3.2.4 Released: A Fresh Wave of Bug Fixes and Improvements

GIMP 3.2.4 has been released, bringing a series of important bug fixes. This latest maintenance update in the 3.2.x stable series follows the earlier version 3.2.2, which was launched in March. Among the improvements, there are notable adjustments to layer workflows, ensuring that operations like ‘Layers to Image Size’ and ‘Resize Layer to Selection’ apply strictly to raster layers, avoiding unintended effects on vector, linked, or text layers.

Additionally, issues that caused tools to unintentionally rasterize linked, text, and vector layers have been addressed. A layer naming problem, which led to confusion, particularly when importing XCF files into different projects, has also been resolved. Previously, layer names were often replaced with the XCF file name instead of retaining their original names.

The update enhances the Text tool’s efficiency by improving its handling of keyboard shortcuts when text is selected, ensuring that these shortcuts do not mistakenly trigger global actions. Furthermore, performance has been boosted, particularly when moving floating layers or selections, as the visibility of the marching ants outline is now temporarily disabled.

Other improvements include enhanced import features for different file formats such as PNG, PSD, JIF, PVR, ORA, and PDF. The GIMP team has introduced a new Windows WIA scanner plugin, replacing the outdated TWAIN, which relied on 32-bit libraries. The update also includes new translations, one of which is for the Lao language.

This release primarily focuses on resolving bugs, with major new features having been introduced in GIMP 3.2.0. Development is now progressing towards GIMP 3.4.x for future updates, and users can expect to hear more about new features and development builds for GIMP 3.3.x in the months to come.

Availability

GIMP 3.2.4 will be downloadable for Windows, macOS, and Linux from the GIMP project website shortly. Existing users will receive the update automatically through Flathub, the Snap Store, or other supported installation methods.
