Introducing Era: The New Rust-Based Calendar for GNOME Enters Beta Testing

Era, a new calendar app designed for GNOME and built with Rust, has now reached its beta version. This newly introduced calendar aims to provide a beautiful and efficient user experience.

Currently available for installation from Flathub, Era features a familiar interface reminiscent of GNOME’s existing Calendar—largely due to the limitations of displaying dates and events. However, it offers more than just a similar appearance. It allows users to browse dates, add events, edit them, and search through their calendar entries while syncing with numerous online services. Users can toggle views among Year, Month, and Agenda, and manage multiple calendars through a practical sidebar.

The app’s event editor includes fields to name events, specify times and durations, and set locations. The design, based on GTK4/libadwaita, is clean and adaptive, making it user-friendly across different screen sizes.

The backend implementation is noteworthy as well. Although Era utilizes Evolution Data Server (EDS) similar to GNOME Calendar, it does not connect directly. Instead, it processes calls via a middleware layer called Clepsydre, which enhances flexibility by allowing interchangeable backends.
