Papirus Icon Set Receives Major Update: 80+ New Icons Added After Year-Long Hiatus

Fans of the Papirus icon theme can rejoice with its latest update—the first since May 2025—which introduces over 80 new or updated icons. This update, addressed by maintainer Serhii Yeremenko, includes icons for various applications, games, and user-interface elements, as well as new file mimetypes and revised symlinks.

Papirus has remained a favorite among Linux users due to its frequent updates. Unlike many icon packs that fade into obscurity after an initial burst of activity, Papirus has been consistently maintained since its inception in 2013. This is crucial as maintaining an icon set is challenging, especially with the constant release of new applications and the evolving design of existing ones.

The new update enhances coverage for popular applications like AIMP, Amnezia VPN, Brave, and Jellyfin Desktop, among others. Additionally, gaming icons for titles such as AssaultCube Reloaded and Team Fortress 2 have also been added. Enhancements extend to file icon representations for various formats, including those used by Nintendo DS emulators, improving the overall user experience across different Linux desktop environments.

The update also benefits Cinnamon, LxQt, and XFCE users with updated symlinks. Importantly, redesigned icons for development tools such as IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm have been incorporated.

To install the new Papirus icons, users can either download the release from GitHub or use a PPA for simpler installation on Ubuntu-based systems. Instructions for both methods are readily available, allowing users to easily enhance their desktop experience with fresh icons.
