Ubuntu 25.10 to Lose Security Updates This Week: What You Need to Know
Support for Ubuntu 25.10, known as “Questing Quokka,” concludes on July 9, 2026, which is this week. Users still on this version are encouraged to upgrade directly to Ubuntu 26.04 LTS to continue receiving updates.
Launched in October 2025, Ubuntu 25.10 is classified as an ‘interim release,’ which means it only receives nine months of updates. In contrast, Long-Term Support (LTS) versions are provided with five years of updates on the desktop, plus an additional five years via an Ubuntu Pro subscription.
After a version reaches its end of life, it continues to function, but users lose access to critical security updates and essential bug fixes from Canonical. Although applications like Firefox, delivered through Snap, will keep updating independently, the underlying snapd engine updates via APT, meaning newer changes might not be applicable.
Remaining on an unsupported version can pose significant security risks due to the absence of timely patches for discovered vulnerabilities. Moreover, third-party software vendors, Personal Package Archives (PPAs), and APT repositories tend to discontinue support for EOL releases. Ultimately, Canonical archives the series’ APT repository, complicating software installation and sourcing.
However, most desktop users and businesses favor long-term support versions of Ubuntu. Those choosing interim releases are generally aware of their limited support timeframe.
