Ubuntu 26.10 Snapshot 2 Released: What’s Behind the ‘Breaking Change’?

Ubuntu 26.10 Snapshot 2 has been released, marking the second of four planned snapshots in the development cycle of ‘Stonking Stingray,’ set for a stable launch in October. While the update does not introduce significant new features, it serves a purpose for developers and testers keen on identifying bugs.
Utkarsh Gupta from Canonical announced a noteworthy "breaking change" regarding the URL structure used for accessing these images. Previously, Ubuntu desktop images were hosted in a top-level directory but have now been organized into a named subfolder. This adjustment aligns desktop releases with Ubuntu’s official flavors for consistency.
For those who rely on daily builds, however, there’s an important update: the previous links to daily builds will no longer work as Canonical has chosen not to implement redirects. The links have now shifted from cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live to cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/stonking/daily-live, which means users will need to update their bookmarks accordingly.
Ubuntu’s monthly snapshots are intended as "throwaway artifacts" from Canonical’s automated image-building process and do not undergo the same extensive quality assurance as traditional alpha builds. Thus, they act as testing grounds rather than stable releases. Users not actively developing should opt for daily builds for a more updated experience.
Snapshot 3 for Ubuntu 26.10 is expected to launch on July 30. Users who install Snapshot 2 should keep their systems updated for the latest developments, which will include user-facing changes like the new GNOME 51 desktop and planned AI features, such as enabling voice typing across any text field.
