Ubuntu 27.04 “Tenacious T-Rex” Opens for Development

Ubuntu 27.04, codenamed “Tenacious T-Rex,” has officially entered development. Its archive opened on 30 October 2026, allowing packages to begin syncing from Debian. Over the next six months, developers will test and refine those packages ahead of the stable release.

Ubuntu 27.04 is scheduled to arrive on 22 April 2027, with a beta planned for 1 April.

What to expect

The release is likely to include GNOME 52 and, depending on development schedules, Linux kernel 7.6 or newer. Canonical is also signaling a greater role for Rust, including plans to make ntpd-rs the default time-synchronization tool.

Development of Ubuntu Core Desktop, an all-Snap version of Ubuntu, is also set to accelerate. It is not expected to be the standard download or ready for everyday use, but a preview could offer an early look at the project.

Other areas of work include improving the installer’s support for TPM-backed full-disk encryption, strengthening secure boot, and preparing packages for Ubuntu’s HWE firmware initiative.

Could AI features arrive?

The Myna voice-dictation tool is currently available as a technology preview in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and 26.10. Its AI models are too large to include by default, though an opt-in option for desktop users could be considered.

Canonical is also exploring ways to bring on-device AI to the desktop. One example is a concept for an AI-powered Ubuntu launcher, created by a Canonical engineer following internal design discussions. It is a mockup rather than a working application, but it points to ideas the company is considering.
