Why Your Ubuntu 26.04 Installation Might Be Silent on Updates: Key Insights and Solutions

If you haven’t been bugged about updates on your Ubuntu 26.04 LTS install lately, there’s a reason behind it. A recent Launchpad bug report pointed out that the update-manager in this version fails to notify users about pending updates unless the update notification tray icon is actively enabled.

Here’s the catch: by default, this tray icon was disabled in Ubuntu 26.04, and there’s no option in the Settings to turn it back on. While this may seem concerning, it’s somewhat mitigated by the fact that Ubuntu has unattended-upgrades enabled by default, which silently installs security updates in the background without notifying users. However, if users choose to turn off this feature, they will receive no notifications at all regarding any updates due to the ongoing bug.

Historically, the Software Updater was designed to prompt users about updates, but many found it intrusive as it often interrupted their workflow. To address this, Ubuntu 25.10 introduced quieter desktop notifications for updates, but the silent approach adopted in version 26.04 may catch long-time users off guard.

Enabling the missing icon can be done through the terminal with the command: gsettings set com.ubuntu.update-notifier show-updates-status-icon true. Unfortunately, there’s no graphical toggle available for this setting. Alternatively, the GUI tool dconf-editor can be used to adjust the setting, though care should be taken to avoid incorrect changes.

Also, it’s notable that Ubuntu 26.04 has removed the Software & Updates tool from new installations to simplify system management. However, this tool can still be installed from the repositories if users desire more control over updates.

For those who prefer a more proactive approach to updates, using the Software Updater, running apt upgrade, or using the App Center, which now supports upgrading Deb packages alongside Snaps, are alternate routes to stay informed.
